As a travel writer/influencer who has visited Abilene for several years, I was thrilled to see the attractions, but the food scene was basic. Don’t get me wrong—the iconic Brookville Hotel (closed a few years ago) was always magnificent, and I could get a tasty meal at M&R Grill and Amanda’s Bakery & Bistro. But Abilene was not a foodie destination by a long shot.
On my most recent visits (May, August, and October), new places emerged, and I began seeing a spike in the restaurant department. This development excites the residents and draws travelers eager to savor something special. It helps us content creators “sell” your destination to our readers and followers, which makes me so happy for Abilene’s community and economy.
Without further ado, here is a list of Abilene, Kansas restaurants, with menu items I’ve enjoyed noted. Please use this guide to find the kind of food and setting that will please you and your family.
Time will tell, but I am excited for the fact that Abilene might be emerging as a foodie town, as first noticed by my friend Sara of Travel with Sara.
Table of Contents
M&R Grill
I visited M&R Grill, a local gem known for its hearty comfort food and welcoming atmosphere, for lunch. It’s the kind of place where you walk in as a stranger and leave feeling like family—truly. Their menu boasts an array of classic American dishes, with a standout being their mouthwatering chicken-fried steak smothered in creamy gravy.
I also recommend the burgers and chicken Philly sandwich. Swap the fries for a healthier option: green beans, chock full of flavor.
Tossed N Sauced Pizza
Tossed N Sauced Pizza is where creativity meets pizza perfection. This local pizzeria takes pride in crafting unique flavor combinations that tantalize taste buds. Whether you’re a fan of classic Margherita or enjoy adventurous toppings like prosciutto and fig, Tossed N Sauced delivers.
Bonus: Their cozy atmosphere makes it an ideal spot for family gatherings or casual dinners with friends.
The Hickok Spirit & Eats
Another newbie to the Abilene foodiescape is The Hickok, offering BBQ specialties like fire-smoked chicken, beef brisket, smoked sausage, pulled pork, and million-dollar bacon appetizers. It’s all good, but the Branding Iron Burger (peanut butter burger) with million-dollar bacon and jalapeño jelly on a grilled bun is a force to be reckoned with.
Choose your size, either 1⁄4 or 1⁄2 pound.
Side items that receive rave reviews include apple slaw, Ron’s jalapeno pinto beans, and fire pit corn.
Ike’s Kitchen + Taps
Ike’s 2.0 Kitchen represents the modern evolution of the Abilene dining scene. Known for its innovative menu, Ike’s offers a contemporary twist on traditional flavors.
Whether you’re savoring their country-fried steak, wings, or the jam-on-it burger (grilled onions, bacon, caramelized balsamic jam, and American cheese), each dish is crafted with creativity and flair. This is the go-to spot for those seeking a culinary adventure right in the heart of Abilene.
Legacy Kansas
Legacy Kansas (Munson’s Prime & Brookville Hotel) is a result of combining Abilene’s long-standing Brookville Hotel and Munson’s Prime of Junction City. It is a must-visit for anyone craving a nostalgic and unique meal.
The all-you-can-eat fried chicken feast is legendary. Expect crispy chicken, cream-style corn, Pennsylvanian creamy coleslaw, real mashed potatoes with gravy, and a starter plate of cold relishes and cottage cheese.
Homemade ice cream is a complimentary dessert.
Legacy Kansas is open Thursday through Sunday. The price is $24.19 for adults and $7.19 for kids ages 7-13. Carryout is available. In addition to the chicken meal, Munson’s beef steaks and country-fried steak are also available.
Munson Taphouse
Sharing the same building with Legacy Kansas, Munson Taphouse adds a lively dimension to Abilene’s culinary options. This establishment is a haven for beer enthusiasts, featuring a rotating selection of craft brews that cater to every palate.
Pair your drink with one of their delicious flatbreads or a hearty sandwich, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere that makes Munson Taphouse a popular spot for socializing and relaxation.
Need suggestions for what to try? The crispy onion rings are the perfect starter, and besides a burger or sandwich, go for the chicken quesadilla, sure to please any palate. However, the Patty Melt and fries with a side salad (hello Dorothy Lynch dressing!) can easily satisfy cravings and meal satisfaction.
Amanda’s Bakery & Bistro
A mainstay in Downtown Abilene is Amanda’s Bakery & Bistro, a delightful spot that combines the warmth of a hometown bakery with the elegance of a bistro. The first thing you notice when you enter is the intoxicating aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries. Their lemon blueberry scones are a must-try, offering citrusy sweetness in every bite.
What separates Amanda’s is the blend of homemade goodness with a touch of sophistication, making it a perfect breakfast or brunch destination. You’ll see groups of friends, families, travelers, ladies’ luncheons, and teenagers enjoying the custom-made sandwiches, sides, soups, and bierocks.
Take advantage of the arsenal of pastries in the case behind the cashier, and treat yourself to a fancy coffee or tea.
Rackets Tap House
Rackets Tap House is a newcomer making waves in Abilene’s beer and wine scene. The space is minimalistic in decor but has a self-serve beer and wine wall, plus a variety of games and things to enhance your visit.
Though Rackets doesn’t make food at this time, they were so considerate as to partner with someone who does. Guests can munch on a charcuterie board or small plates while enjoying the ambiance. Sundays include a brunch charcuterie featuring items from Amanda’s Bakery & Bistro and Hapisoul Cafe & Juicery.
Rackets also hosts weekend food trucks, has pizza night from Tossed N Sauced, and allows you to bring in your own food.
Hapisoul Cafe & Juicery
Hapisoul Cafe & Juicery, specializing in fresh juices, smoothies, and plant-based dishes, offers a refreshing break from the traditional for those seeking a healthier option. This cafe nourishes the body and soul, appealing to health-conscious locals and travelers.
Their delicious green smoothie bowl does just that, cram-packed with fruits and superfoods.
Joe Snuffy’s Old Fashioned Grill
Joe Snuffy’s Old Fashioned Grill is a nod to simpler times, where you can enjoy a classic diner experience with a twist. The menu features timeless favorites like juicy hand-pattied burgers (Wild Bill Burger is primo!) and tasty fries, but breakfast is another hot commodity.
The honkin’ big pancakes and eggs with toast come highly recommended. Snuffy’s is closed on Tuesday but open for breakfast and lunch every other day.
La Fiesta Mexican Restaurant
La Fiesta Mexican Restaurant brings the vibrant flavors of Mexico to Abilene. Mexican cuisine might be the most popular international food for locals and travelers. Whether savoring sizzling fajitas or indulging in a plate of enchiladas, each dish offers rich, bold flavors.
Pair your food with a signature margarita for the ultimate fiesta experience. Don’t skip the fried flour chips and queso!
Midwest Creamery & Q
Midwest Creamery & Q combines two beloved favorites—ice cream and barbecue—into one delightful establishment. Their creamy ice cream flavors range from traditional vanilla to inventive creations like honey lavender. I tried a peach and cream snow cone, which was so refreshing and yummy.
Meanwhile, their barbecue offerings are another big hit, with tender brisket and savory pulled pork. It’s a culinary fusion that’s sure to satisfy any craving.
Susie’s Deli LLC
Susie’s Deli brings a touch of homestyle goodness to the dining table, offering an array of sandwiches, salads, and daily specials. Her commitment to using fresh ingredients to create simple yet flavorful dishes makes this shop a must-visit. That and the delicious macaroni salad that Abilene is already raving about.
Susie’s signature chicken salad sandwich, with a hint of tarragon, is already a crowd favorite, and the friendly staff adds to the ambiance and allure. Several locals have bragged about how good the chili and cinnamon rolls are.
Don’t Forget the Dinner Train Options (Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad)
Hop aboard the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad for a memorable train ride and often a dinner option. Food is catered and might include a meal similar to chicken and stuffing, creamy mashed potatoes with chives and gravy, home-style green beans, and pound cake with strawberries for dessert.
Mmm, mmm, good stuff right here, and a reason for a date night, too.
Coming Soon: The Farmhouse
Excitement is building as The Farmhouse prepares to open its doors. Set on the outskirts of town, this historic restaurant promises to be a culinary gem.
With a menu inspired by local flavors and a charming setting reminiscent of days gone by, The Farmhouse is positioned to become a favorite for residents and visitors. It was Dwight D. Eisenhower’s favorite spot, adding a touch of historical intrigue to the dining experience.
